Man Utd cruise clear at top
Goalscorer Dwight Yorke crashes into Coventry opposite number Noel Whelan
Coventry 1-2 Man Utd
Manchester United continued their impressive start to the defence of the Premiership title as they moved three points clear at the top of the table.
Scholes' performance will have given England manager Kevin Keegan, who was watching in the stands, plenty to smile about as he prepares for the crucial Euro 2000 qualifier against Poland.
United carved out a host of early chances without being able to break through the Sky Blues defences.
But just when the visitors were beginning to show signs of frustration, Scholes took his chance.
The midfielder was thrown into the fray after 61 minutes - and within seconds he had broken the deadlock.
Dwight Yorke supplied the ammunition with a cross from the right flank and Scholes hit a 12-yard shot that deflecte off prostrate defender Gary Breen and past Magnus Hedman.
Scholes then returned the favour for with a key role in the build-up to Yorke's goal and United's second.
By this stage the visitors were camped in the Coventry half for long periods and they made the pressure count in the 75th minute when Scholes found David Beckham, who crossed for Yorke to head home.
But Coventry showed they are a resilient side these days as they shrugged off the loss of key striker Noel Whelan with an ankle injury in the first half and battled throughout.
Ten minutes from time they forced their way onto the scoresheet when John Aloisi converted a pass from Robbie Keane.
United created enough clear chances to have won the match comfortably.
But they squandered at least three gilt-edged openings and Yorke hit the woodwork as well.
Teddy Sheringham, restored in attack in place of Andy Cole, was at the heart of most of their best moments, while Beckham was again a dangerous influence from midfield.
