Bayern have edge over Porto
![]() The first half was a largely uninspiring encounter
FC Porto 1-1 Bayern Munich
A late goal by Bayern Munich's Paulo Sergio earned the German side a draw and a vital away goal against FC Porto. Last season's runners-up now have a tangible advantage to take into the home leg against Portuguese outfit, needing only a 0-0 draw to progress to the semi-finals of the European Cup.
This quarter-final is a rematch of the 1987 European Cup Final, which Porto won 2-1 in a classic encounter. The spectacle on Tuesday night failed to lived up to its advanced notices as the two sides sparred and probed at each other's defences for the first 45 minutes. Capucho and then Jardel nearly gave Porto the advantage before the interval as Bayern's Oliver Kahn turned out a particularly poor performance in the German goal.
That never looked like lasting, despite the best efforts of Bayern's midfield tandem of Stefan Effenberg and Jens Jeremies. A minute after the break, Jardel pounced to claim his ninth Champions League goal of the season. A superbly accurate cross by Yugoslav international Ljubinko Drulovic allowed the tall Brazilian to rise above Kahn and nod the ball home. Bayern lost some composure, but they gradually clawed their way back into it and Paulo Sergio snatched the equaliser when he caught the Porto defence napping to strike from close range. A ferocious closing period saw both Aloisio and Jardel carded as the Portuguese side went in pursuit of the winner that was ultimately denied them.
