Barca lose way in fog
Luis Enrique celebrates his goal in Berlin's Olympic Stadium

Barcelona lost their way in the Berlin fog as the Champions League favourites drew 1-1 with Hertha in the Olympic Stadium.

Group A of the competition's second stage began with Porto on top of the table after they won 2-0 in the Czech Republic at Sparta Prague.

In Manchester United's Group A, the defending champions were saved the embarrassment of starting at the bottom of the table because of their 2-0 defeat at Fiorentina.

Valencia scored a third goal in injury time to beat Bordeaux 3-0 and ensure the French side propped up the first table.

Group A: Hertha Berlin 1-1 Barcelona

Luis Enrique opened the scoring for the favourites in the 14th minute with a close range header.

Luis Figo's corner was nodded on by Phillip Cocu for the Spaniard to head in from an unmarked position.

Many of the 75,000 people inside the Olympic Stadium were unable to see most of the game due to the thick fog.

But Hertha pressed on and equalised in the 33rd minute through Kai Michalke, with a speculative shot from the edge of the area.

A string of second half saves by home keeper Gabor Kiraly kept the Germans in the game as the inclement weather threatened to reduce proceedings to a farce.

Uefa officials considered abandoning the fixture but after discussion with the Russian referee Nikolai Levnikov at half time they opted to continue.

Second half goals ensured the Portuguese head the Group A table after a single game.

Both sides missed chances in the first half, but the visitors stepped up pressure after the break.

Subsitute Ljubinko Drulovic scored in the 77th minute.

The Yugoslav striker had only come on four minutes earlier for Rubens Junior.

In-form Brazilian striker Mario Jardel made sure of the win three minutes before time.

Group B: Valencia 3-0 Bordeaux

Bordeaux's Lilian Laslandes fends off Miroslav Djukic
Second-half goals from Francisco Farinos, Adrian Ilie and Kily Gonzalez fired Valencia to the top of Manchester United's Group B.

Farinos broke the deadlock on the hour with a stunning strike from some 25 yards.

Romanian Ilie scrambled home a second just six minutes later when Bordeaux defender Nisa Saveljic only half-connected with a Claudio Lopez cross.

And Argentine midfielder Gonzalez sealed the Spanish side's win, and the group lead, with their third goal two minutes from time.
