The organisers of the African Cup of Nations have made the draw for the initial qualifying stages of the 2002 tournament in Mali.

The winners of the preliminary-round matches and the teams who received byes will go into a fresh draw during July, when seven groups of four will be created with the winners and runners-up qualifying for the finals.

Hosts Mali and the Nations Cup holders qualify for the finals automatically.
