An ugly chapter in Colombia's football history has been brought into the fore again with reports of more death threats.

Both coach Hernan Dario Gomez Jaramillo and controversial forward Victor Hugo Aristizabal have received threatening telephone calls.

Alvaro Fina, President of the Colombian Soccer Federation, said the body was "disconcerted" over the threats, which are said to come from "fanatics or people placing bets".

He would not reveal how many threats have been received or what was said.

National Police chief General Rosso Jose Serrano told reporters he had "nothing concrete" on the threats.

Striker Faustino Asprilla was a little more vociferous on the matter: "I'm tired of the threats," he told television crews. "What kind of country do we live in?" asked the Parma star. "We try to make people happy."

The threats recall the murder of defender Andres Escobar, who scored an own goal in the 1990 tournament, and was shot dead outside a Colombian bar.

In addition, the then-coach Francisco Maturana was forced to flee Colombia because of death threats.
