Angry Waddle quits Owls

Waddle (left) feels he and Peter Shreeves (right) have been badly treated
Former England star Chris Waddle has walked out on Sheffield Wednesday, accusing the club of treating him with a "lack of respect".

The Owls' reserve coach said he was unhappy about the way he and caretaker manager Peter Shreeves had been treated by Wednesday.

Waddle departed within minutes of the arrival of new manager Paul Jewell, who made a surprise move from Premiership survivors Bradford on Wednesday.

"I'm disappointed. Peter and I were led to believe we had a chance of taking charge permanently," said Waddle.

"That's why I did not take up the chance of media work for Euro 2000.

"But instead I have been sitting around for weeks waiting for the club to come to a decision."

The management post at Wednesday has been without a permanent appointment since Danny Wilson was sacked at the end of last season.

Jewell was recruited because he has a track record in getting teams out of the First Division, and the Owls were impressed by his ability to manage on a shoestring budget.
