Rioch parts company with Norwich

Bruce Rioch: Unexpected decision to leave
Former Scotland international Bruce Rioch has parted company with First Division Norwich after a run that has seen the side win just one of its last 11 games.

A club spokesman said Rioch has approached them about his position and that his contract had been ended "by agreement" after less than two years at the helm.

Whilst the Board was surprised and disappointed at this development ... the Board and Bruce agree that it is now in the best interests of the club and Bruce to part company

The club's director of football Bryan Hamilton will take over until the end of the season.

The former Northern Ireland manager's first match in charge will be the East Anglian derby at Ipswich on Sunday.

Rioch took over at Carrow Road in June 1998 and took the Canaries to ninth last season - a position he looked unlikely to improve upon after poor run of games.

He had previously managed Arsenal and Bolton.

The club's statement said: "Following an approach from first team manager Bruce Rioch and subsequent discussion, the Board and the first team manager have agreed to end his contract with the club with immediate effect.

"Whilst the Board was surprised and disappointed at this development, which was not expected, the Board and Bruce agree that it is now in the best interests of the club and Bruce to part company.

"The Board wish to thank Bruce for his contribution to the club, and wish him well in his future career."
