United deputy chief executive Peter Kenyon
"I can assure that any speculation is just pure speculation"

Beckham reports dismissed

Manchester United have described as "nonsense" reports that David Beckham is being put on the transfer list.

The club's deputy chief executive Peter Kenyon told Radio 5 Live that Beckham still had a major role to play at Old Trafford.

It followed newspaper reports of a secret board meeting at the club which it was claimed had decided to sell the player.

Normal board meetings happen every week and the meeting last week was a normal board meeting. The discussions as reported are pure speculation and nonsense

Sir Alex Ferguson
The reports suggested that Beckham and manager Sir Alex Ferguson were barely on speaking terms following a series of bust-ups between the two men.

But Kenyon said he was focused on helping the club retain their Premiership and Champions League titles.

"There were no secret meetings. The only meetings that are taking place are discussing how we're going to get through the next nine games in 28 days," said Kenyon.

"Normal board meetings happen every week and the meeting last week was a normal board meeting. The discussions as reported are pure speculation and nonsense.

"Everybody's focus, including David's, at Manchester United is on the later stages of the Champions League and Premier League.

"Obviously David's a high-profile player and this is something he's got to live with and we've got to live with.

"But the way David's playing, the focus right now is where we're going to finish up this year. Any speculation in the papers is that - it's pure speculation."

Future

Kenyon insisted Beckham has a future at United and the club would be looking to extend the contracts of their star players when the time was right.

"There's no reason why David won't be staying at Manchester United," he said.

"We've got a great squad with great individual players and I'm sure when it's time for those discussions, they will take place and we'll all be looking for the right outcome.

"That'll happen when we're ready and David's ready and that time isn't now."
