Spackman: fed up with losing star players

Sheffield United have promoted Steve Thompson to be their manager for the rest of the season following the resignation of Nigel Spackman.

The club has also appointed director Kevin McCabe as acting chairman until the end of the season.

He replaces Mike McDonald who quit after coming under fire following Spackman's resignation last week.

The board of directors unanimously decided on Thompson because they were impressed with his performance during his time as an assistant to Spackman.

He has acted as caretaker manager since his former boss left the club.

Lou Macari and Brian Little had also been thought to be under consideration for the manager's job.

Spackman quit the Blades saying he had been forced to sell too many star players.

During his nine months with the First Division club he had been forced to part with strikers Brian Deane and Jan Aage Fjortoft and midfielder Don Hutchison.

Furious fans turned their frustration on McDonald, jeering him at the midweek game at home to Ipswich. He then left saying he could not remain without the backing of supporters.

The Deputy Chairman Freddie Pye had also threatened to resign.
