Beckham banned
David Beckham has received a one-match suspension for his high tackle on Necaxa's Jose Milian.
United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who was ordered from the bench during the clash, has been banned from the technical zone for one game and fined £2,000 for "unacceptable behaviour".
The penalties were imposed by Fifa's three-man disciplinary committee who met on Friday.
Beckham, who was fined £800, will now miss Saturday's crucial clash against Vasco da Gama. Ferguson was happy with both punishments. "In the case of David I think it's a fair one - one game," he said. "When you are sent off in these tournaments you always know you are going to miss the next match any way so it's to be expected and we think it's fair." Ferguson claims not to have seen the television replay of Beckham's challenge, and is adamant that the reaction of the Necaxa players got him dismissed.
"He came over his
shoulder and I think the lad came flying in, though he put his foot up to
protect himself," he said.
"I think it's turned out looking more nasty, from what I can gather, than it really was. "I don't think it was intentional and I still maintain that the Mexican players got him sent off by their reaction." Fifa's director of communications, Keith Cooper said: "The Fifa disciplinary committee met on Friday morning to study the referee's report from Thursday's match and the video of the incident involving the sending off of David Beckham. "They came to the following conclusions - in the case of David Beckham, he will serve an automatic one-match suspension for tomorrow's match against Vasco da Gama. "He will be fined 2,000 Swiss francs which is approximately £800, the offence being serious foul play.
"In the case of Sir Alex Ferguson he also gets a one-match ban from the technical zone and he will have to follow the match from the stands.
"That also applies to the match against Vasco da Gama in his case and there is also a fine of 5,000 Swiss Francs which is approximately £2,000, the offence being unacceptable behaviour. "This was the decision of the three-man disciplinary committee under chairman Marcel Mathier of Switzerland. The other two members were from Portugal and El Salvador." Ferguson was unperturbed by his own punishment and said: "It's nothing really to be honest with you. "The referee had lost it by that time anyway and it's not a big hardship to sit in the stands for a game." United have asked Fifa if the fine can go to a local children's charity. Fifa are expected to agree and the money will go towards one of their children's projects in Rio.
