McIlroy gets NI job

Sammy McIlroy during his international playing career

Sammy McIlroy has been confirmed as the new manager of Northern Ireland.

He has stepped down as boss of Third Division Macclesfield to take up the post on a full-time basis after being awarded a two-year contract.

Martin O'Neill Martin O'Neill: Turned down part-time role
The 45-year-old succeeds previous incumbent Lawrie McMenemy, who quit after his side's disappointing showing in their World Cup qualifying campaign.

Irish Football Association general secretary David Bowen said McIlroy - capped 88 times for Northern Ireland - was a "unanimous" choice.

"Following a meeting at 6.30pm this evening at IFA headquarters, the international committee announced the appointment of ex-Northern Ireland captain Sammy McIlroy as the new manager," he said.

"This is to be a full-time post for the next two years and will cover the next World Cup, 2000-2002.

"The decision of the committee was unanimous once the members had been advised by the president and general secretary of the available options following many weeks of intensive research."
