Beckham out of Belgium clash

David Beckham: Sitting it out

Star midfielder David Beckham has been ruled out of England's friendly against Belgium on Sunday.

England coach Kevin Keegan: Planning for neither play-offs nor World Cup qualifiers next year
The Manchester United player is suffering from a hamstring injury that will not have cleared up in time for the clash at Sunderland's Stadium of Light.

He joins a growing list of doubtful players, with captain Alan Shearer, defenders Martin Keown and Tony Adams and midfielder Paul Scholes all sitting out training on Tuesday.

Coach Kevin Keegan will be assessing these players over the next couple of days with a view to bringing up replacements. At present, Gareth Southgate is the only player covering both Keown and Adams.

Jonathan Woodgate has already pulled out of the 25-man squad with a back injury.

Among the players who could replace Beckham in the side will be Ray Parlour, Kieron Dyer or newly called up Trevor Sinclair.
