Yorke gets his award

Dwight Yorke scoring one of his 29 goals against Charlton

Manchester United's Dwight Yorke has been named the Carling Player of the Year .

Yorke's 29 goals have helped take United to the brink of an unprecedented treble, with Alex Ferguson's side looking to add the FA Cup and the European Cup to the Premiership title they have already won.

The £12.6m signing from Aston Villa edged David Beckham in the voting and adds his honour to that of Ferguson, who was named Carling Manager of the Year.

The Trinidad and Tobago international's selection will make up for his own disappointment at not winning the PFA and Football Writers awards, both won by Tottenham's David Ginola.
