Friday, February 26, 1999 Published at 09:27 GMT Sport: Football Wembley delay threatens 2006 bid ![]() Wembley is due to undergo a massive redevelopment England's hopes of staging the 2006 World Cup could be scuppered by a delay in selling off Wembley, shareholders in the national stadium have been warned. The Football Association's planned purchase of Wembley, which looked to have been completed last month, still has not gone ahead. And with no imminent resolution on the cards, the FA's rival for the buy-out, leisure group ENIC, has revealed it is "continuing to monitor the Wembley situation" and says it has the funds to launch an increased offer. It is hoped that a major redevelopment of the famous ground will be the centrepiece of England's 2006 World Cup campaign. The FA has until July to provide written details of its bid to football's world governing body Fifa - including information on the new stadium that will replace Wembley and could stage the World Cup final. But Alec McGivan, director of the 2006 World Cup campaign, told The Times: "We do need a decision for the future. It is very important for the bid. We do not want any further delay." Shareholders of Wembley plc will consider the offer from the FA - under its umbrella body the English National Stadium Development Company - at its extraordinary general meeting on March 11. |
