Beckham gets police cover
David Batty's penalty miss after extra time saw England crash out
Police in Manchester will continue to protect the footballer David Beckham from angry fans who blame him for England's exit from the World Cup.
Six officers attended Manchester United's Cliff training ground in Salford when Beckham joined his club's first pre-season training session.
A spokesman says the police will keep a "watching brief" and assess the situation daily.
The 23-year-old player was also shadowed by a patrol car as he was chauffeured by his father, Ted, back to his home in the picturesque Manchester suburb of Worsley.
"Regardless of the Beckham situation, you get people at The Cliff hoping to catch a glimpse of the footballers, and the officers were there to ensure there were no public order offences," the spokesman added.
Beckham has been subjected to a hate campaign following his red card for England against Argentina in the World Cup.
Some fans have vowed to give him a hot reception when the new season starts.
