England A make steady progress
Impressive: Vikram Solanki grabbed another half century

England A 295-4 (Ward 60, Solanki 59)

England A impressed with the bat on the opening day of their three-day match against South Island at Christchurch.

Half-centuries from Ian Ward and Mark Alleyne and an entertaining 59 from the in-form Vikram Solanki provided the base for satisfying first day for the tourists.

Everyone is scoring 50, 60 or 70 but not quite pushing on to get the 150 or 200 that we're all looking for

The windy and rain-swept conditions interrupted the day's play and also provided the opening pair of Michael Gough and Ward with the proposition of dealing with plenty of movement from the ball.

Gough impressed for Durham this season to earn himself a call up to the England A side, but the Hartlepool-born youngster fell for just 17 runs, caught and bowled off Chris Martin.

Ward and Solanki added a further 55 runs before the left-hander was caught by wicket-keeper Hopkins off the bowling of Warren Wisneski.

Wisneski also grabbed the wicket of Solanki, clean bowling the Worcestershire star.

Somerset's Marcus Trescothick just missed out on his 50 when he became involved in a mix up with Alleyne and was subsequently run out just five runs short.

David Sales scored 22 runs, before he drove Wisneski's ball into the covers and the grateful hands of Robert Lawson.

Captain Alleyne remained unbeaten on 53, while batting partner Rob Turner added 29 runs to leave England A with a healthy first innings in their latest tour match.
