England A make steady progress
England A 295-4 (Ward 60, Solanki 59) England A impressed with the bat on the opening day of their three-day match against South Island at Christchurch. Half-centuries from Ian Ward and Mark Alleyne and an entertaining 59 from the in-form Vikram Solanki provided the base for satisfying first day for the tourists.
Gough impressed for Durham this season to earn himself a call up to the England A side, but the Hartlepool-born youngster fell for just 17 runs, caught and bowled off Chris Martin. Ward and Solanki added a further 55 runs before the left-hander was caught by wicket-keeper Hopkins off the bowling of Warren Wisneski. Wisneski also grabbed the wicket of Solanki, clean bowling the Worcestershire star. Somerset's Marcus Trescothick just missed out on his 50 when he became involved in a mix up with Alleyne and was subsequently run out just five runs short. David Sales scored 22 runs, before he drove Wisneski's ball into the covers and the grateful hands of Robert Lawson. Captain Alleyne remained unbeaten on 53, while batting partner Rob Turner added 29 runs to leave England A with a healthy first innings in their latest tour match.
