Headley tour could be over
Dean Headley: Back spasm in first tour match

A suspected stress fracture of the back could end Dean Headley's involvement in England's winter tour of South Africa.

"The frustrating thing is he can do everything except bowl"

Further medical advice is being sought before a final decision is taken on whether or not to send the Kent seamer home. He was diagnosed on Friday and will consult a Johannesburg back specialist in the first half of this week.

The injury first came to light when Headley suffered a back spasm after bowling less than two overs in the opening tour match against Nicky Oppenheimer's XI.

If he has suffered a stress fracture, he is likely to be out of cricket for at least two or three months.

Physiotherapist Dean Conway said: "The frustrating thing is he can do everything except bowl.

"What we are doing by sending him to a back specialist is to satisfy ourselves that the original diagnosis is correct."

The tour has not been a success for Headley, who has been given until the start of the four-day match against KwaZulu-Natal in Durban on December 3 to prove that he is fit.

Yorkshire fast bowler Chris Silverwood, who was called up from the England A tour of New Zealand last week, is likely to be his replacement.
