Tudor recalled for final warm-up

Tudor impressed the England management with his pace in the nets

Fast bowler Alex Tudor has been given a surprise call up for England's final warm-up match before the first Test against South Africa.

If the Surrey paceman performs well against a strong Combined Northerns/Gauteng XI he will hope to stake his claim to a place in the opening Test in Johannesburg.

He had not been expected to figure in the tourists' plans for the game at the Wanderers on November 25 following his long lay-off with knee trouble.

But after impressing in the nets Tudor was recalled to face a strong side which includes five Test players.

Tudor is selected alongside an all-seam attack of Gavin Hamilton, Andrew Caddick and Darren Gough.

Michael Vaughan will be England's main spin option and the top seven remains unchanged.

Coach Duncan Fletcher said: "We really want to have a look at Alex because he offers us a lot of bounce. He could be quite an awkward customer later on when he gets it right."

England team to face Northerns/Guateng XI at Centurion in four day match starting November 18:
MA Atherton (Lancashire), MA Butcher (Surrey), N Hussain (Essex, capt), MP Vaughan (Yorkshire), AJ Stewart (Surrey, wkt), CJ Adams (Sussex), A Flintoff (Lancashire), GM Hamilton (Yorkshire), AJ Tudor (Surrey), AR Caddick (Somerset), D Gough (Yorkshire).

Combined Northerns/Gauteng XI: SV Koenig, AM Bacher, ND McKenzie, DJ Cullinan, M Van Jaarsveld, N Pothas (wkt), S Elworthy, CE Eksteen (capt), WB Masimula, DJ Terbrugge, GJ Smith.
