Hamilton makes his mark

Gavin Hamilton hits out against a combined XI in Bloemfontein

Gavin Hamilton improved his chances of making the England Test squad on Saturday, with an unbeaten 64 against the Free State/Griqualand West Combination XI.

The BBC's Pat Murphy: "Darren Gough made an encouraging return"
At the close of the second day, the home side had reached 156-3 in reply to England's 358 for nine declared, thanks to an unbeaten knock of 80 from former South Africa opener, Gerhardus Liebenberg.

Liebenberg hit 11 fours in a stay of 244 minutes off 194 balls.

Earlier, the 25-year-old Hamilton had hit 64 not out off 99 balls with eight fours after England had resumed on 271 for seven overnight. Together with Allan Mullally (20), Hamilton put on 54 for the ninth wicket before captain Nassar Hussain declared at lunch.

Hamilton continued the good work with the ball after the break and, along with Darren Gough, was the pick of the England bowlers to finish with one for 40 in 10 overs.

Gough ended with one for 37 in 13 overs in only his second day of competitive bowling since a calf muscle injury ruined his season in mid-July.

The first Test against South Africa starts in Johannesburg on 23 November.
