Pakistan salvage some pride
![]() Century man: Inzamam passes three figures
Pakistan 256 & 421, Sri Lanka 227 & 228. Pakistan win by 222 runs Sri Lanka win the series 2-1 New captain Moin Khan led Pakistan to a resounding victory over Sri Lanka in the third and final Test to restore some of the hosts battered pride in Karachi. But Sri Lanka still take away a convincing series victory following a two-wicket win in the first Test in Rawalpindi and 57-run triumph in the second Test at Peshawar.
It is their third consecutive Test series victory, following a 1-0 home triumph against Australia last August and a win by the same score in Zimbabwe in November.
By contrast, Pakistan have finally succeeded in breaking their five-match losing streak, which began with a 3-0 demolition in Australia. It is a good start for Moin Khan, who is hoping to bring some stability to a side that went into the series against Sri Lanka in turmoil after the resignations of two captains, Wasim Akram and Saeed Anwar, and coach Intikhab Alam. Former captain Javed Miandad was subsequently appointed coach, while Moin Khan took over the captaincy in time for the Karachi Test.
The home side's win came courtesy of a towering performance by Inzamam ul-Haq, who scored 86 in his first innings, before unleashing 138 runs in the second.
He was ably supported to his century by his captain, who produced a valiant knock of 70, and Younis Khan who clattered out 61. Sanath Jayasuriya's men were set a huge total of 451 to win, but were skittled out for just 228. No batsman made 50, with Romesh Kaluwitharana and Ravindra Pushpakumara scoring 33 and 44 respectively. Pramodya Wickremasinghe went for another duck - his fifth in six innings.
