Melbourne rain rescues India

Wet and thundery: Melbourne on Monday

Torrential Melbourne rain rescued India on day two of the second Test after Australia moved into a commanding position.

Adam Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting put on an unbroken 135 for the sixth wicket as Australia moved from their overnight score of 138 for three to 332 for five.

Ponting's 50 was a highlight of what play there was
Just 45 overs were bowled during the day with thundershowers wiping out the entire final session after 90 minutes were lost earlier in the afternoon.

Gilchrist was unbeaten on 77, while Ponting was on 59 as the Indians struggled to keep runs in check on a wicket that flattened out after the first day.

As on the first day the Indians took two early wickets, with Venkatesh Prasad reducing Australia from 123 for three to 197 for five.

The overnight pair of Michael Slater and captain Steve Waugh added 54 runs in the first hour.

Surfing MCG: The groundstaff amused themselves
Slater was within nine runs of his 14th Test century when he pulled Prasad down Javagal Srinath's throat at long leg.

Five deliveries later, Prasad forced Waugh to edge a catch to wicketkeeper Mannava Prasad.

The bowler's delight was short-lived, and not just because of the efforts of Ponting and Gilchrist.

His aggressive celebration at Slater's dismissal led Sri Lankan match referee Ranjan Madugalle to call the bowler and Indian coach Kapil Dev for a hearing after the day's play.
