Silverwood set to return
Chris Silverwood is in the frame for an England call-up
England are set to recall Yorkshire seam bowler Chris Silverwood for the first Test against New Zealand.
Having recovered from a knee injury sustained against Hampshire a fortnight ago, Silverwood proved he was back to his best with an impressive nine over spell during the Super Cup quarter-final victory, also over Hampshire.
With main strike bowler Darren Gough out through injury, Somerset fast bowler Andy Caddick, Dean Headley, Alex Tudor and Alan Mullally are likely to occupy the other places in the squad.
Andrew Flintoff, Gavin Hamilton and Mark Ealham will compete for the key all-rounder's role.
Alec Stewart will almost certainly be chosen just as a batsman to open alongside Mark Butcher, opening the door for 20-year-old Nottinghamshire wicketkeeper Chris Read to earn his debut after just one full season in county cricket.
Players in contention:
MA Butcher (Surrey), AJ Stewart (Surrey), N Hussain (Essex, capt), GP Thorpe (Surrey), MA Ramprakash (Middlesex), A Flintoff (Lancashire), MA Ealham (Kent), CEW Read (Nottinghamshire), AJ Tudor (Surrey), AR Caddick (Somerset), CEW Silverwood (Yorkshire), DW Headley (Kent), AD Mullally (Leicestershire), PCR Tufnell (Middlesex).
