Ashes squad unlikely to provide surprises

England: Hoping to do better than against Sri Lanka

England's cricket selectors will shortly announce their 17-man squad for the Ashes tour to Australia this winter, in the aftermath of Monday's comprehensive 10-wicket defeat by Sri Lanka at the Oval.

The selectors will also announce squads for the A tour to Zimbabwe and South Africa and one-day squads for the tournaments in Dacca and Perth.

In an Ashes squad that is unlikely to contain any surprises, the main areas of contention look to be between seam bowlers Dean Headley and Andrew Caddick, and batsmen Graeme Hick and John Crawley.

Alec Stewart: Putting Sri Lanka behind the team
The selectors may consider giving experience to a young fast bowler as an understudy to Darren Gough, Angus Fraser, Dominic Cork and Alan Mullally

England is widely acknowledged to need a seventh batsmen to bolster the top order of Mike Atherton, Mark Butcher, Nasser Hussain, Alec Stewart, Mark Ramprakash and the apparently fully-fit Graham Thorpe.

Australia captain Mark Taylor
Neither Hick nor Crawley can be said to have laid a firm claim to that position.

England captain Alec Stewart said: "The idea is to try and win three test matches and finish the summer off well.

"We've played very well during the summer and while it's [the loss to Sri Lanka] taken off a little bit of gloss, hopefully we're looking forward to Australia and doing well."
