Ato Boldon...eclipsed Linford Christie's Commonwealth Games record

Trinidad and Tobago's Ato Boldon got off to a flying start and smashed Linford Christie's Commonwealth Games record to win the 100 metres gold medal.

Boldon, who had never won a 100m championship, came home in 9.88 seconds.

Namibia's Frankie Fredericks was beaten into the silver medal position with Obadele Thompson of Barbados third.

Boldon's time was his fastest ever and was the fourth fastest of all time, only a fraction of a second slower than Donovan Bailey ran in the Atlanta Olympics.

Mike Costello reports on the Fredericks - Boldon battle
The 24-year-old Trinidadian destroyed a high class field after getting off to an astonishingly quick start.

Boldon, who won the world 200m title last year at the world championships, refused to allow his challengers to close on him and raised a victory salute as he crossed the line.

Fredericks, six years his elder, battled it out with Thompson and Australian Matt Shirvington for the minor medals.
