Brodie wins to set up world title shot
European super bantamweight title holder Michael Brodie
European super bantamweight title holder Michael Brodie
Michael Brodie retained his European super bantamweight title despite being floored in the first round by French opponenet Mustafa Hame.

The 26-year-old is hoping for a shot at the world title later this year and had to beat a challenger who had only won 18 of 35 previous fights.

In front of his home Manchester crowd, Brodie eventually put his opponent away in the fourth round after coming back strongly from his early knockdown.

But Brodie caught Hame with a low blow in the third round and was deducted a point as the Frenchman writhed in pain on the canvas.

Confident

Brodie went on to complete his fifth title defence with a crisp left hook to the body which floored Hame who was unable to recover.

Despite the early knockdown, Brodie was confident that he would overcome his opponent.

"I went out there just to relax, I got caught cold and it was a good shot he put me down with," said Brodie.

"But I showed I've got a good chin - as soon as I hit the ground my head was clear. I'm a real champion and I can get up and finish them.

"At the end of the day, if I get beat it's taking money out of my kids' mouths, and that isn't going to happen."

Brodie's world title shot should now come in September when he is set to take on North American champion Willie Jorrin for the vacant WBC title.
