Dubai Millennium wins prize race

Prince of Wales's Stakes, Royal Ascot

Dubai Millennium, ridden by Jerry Bailey, destroyed the rest of the field to win the Prince of Wales's Stakes at Ascot.

The German trained Sumitas came second with Keiron Fallon's ride Beat All finishing in third place.

The Dubai World Cup winner led from the start and never looked back, although for a while it seemed the French trained horse Sendawar was ready to spring a surprise.

The Aga Khan owned Sendawar stayed with Dubai Millennium's pace for three quarters of the race, and in the final straight it seemed as if the horse was ready to capitalise on the Bailey's steady ride.

But the leader, dubbed as the greatest racehorse ever, stepped up a gear in the final furlong to make a mockery of the rest of the field and win by eight lengths.

Drawn back

The pre-race favourite Sendawar, ridden by Gerald Mosse, was eventually drawn back into the pack and lost out on a top three place to 66-1 Sumitas and 14-1 Beat All.

The American Bailey was delighted with his first win in Europe.

"With a good horse there is a certain amount of pressure," said Bailey.

"There is no other horse like him across the pond."

Owner Sheikh Mohammed made an emphatic statement about Dubai Millennium after the race.

"I said last year that he was the best horse in the world and he's the best we've ever had," said the Sheikh.

"I was laughing when I heard another horse was made favourite."

Fallon injury

Champion jockey Kieren Fallon was taken to hospital after falling from his horse Alhawa in the final race of the day, the Ascot Handicap.

Fallon, who had already ridden four winners in the first two days of the Ascot meeting, was involved in a four horse pile-up.

"He has been taken to hospital with injuries to his neck and shoulders," a racecourse spokesman said after the crash.

The race was won by the Irish horse Barba Papa.
