Tyson eyes Hampden bout
Hampden Park
Hampden has played host to sport's biggest names
Heavyweight boxing champion Mike Tyson's next fight is being lined up for Glasgow.

BBC Scotland understands negotiations are now at an advanced stage for Tyson's bout against American Lou Savarese to be staged at the revamped Hampden Park on 24 June.

The final contract details still have to be agreed on what will be another massive night for UK boxing, following Tyson's controversial last visit to the UK in January.

The visit of Tyson, a convicted rapist, caused widespread protests when he was allowed into the country to fight Julius Francis.

Tickets for that fight in Manchester, which Tyson won easily, sold out within two days and there would be a similiar rush for the Hampden event.

One of the obstacles to the fight going ahead is the granting of a licence from Glasgow City Council.

No approach

This normally takes between eight and ten weeks to be processed by the Protective Services Department.

BBC Scotland understands the council has not yet been approached, with the scheduled date for the fight only six weeks away.

Representatives from Frank Warren's Sports Network company travelled to Glasgow earlier this year, with a view to staging Tyson's next fight at the national stadium.

The future of the stadium was only recently secured after its owners ran into financial difficulties.

A rescue package was eventually put together to the satisfaction of all concerned, and the stadium was saved.

Ibrox stadium, home of Rangers Football Club, was also in the running to stage the fighter's next bout, but was ruled out when a suitable date could not be found.
