George Best: Hospital stay extended
Football legend George Best will not leave hospital for at least another week, his doctor has said.

The 53-year-old had hoped to leave the private Cromwell Hospital in west London a week ago after being admitted with alcohol-related liver problems.

But the former Manchester United star has been told he faces at least another week's stay in hospital.

Professor Roger Williams, from the liver unit where Mr Best is being treated, said: "There have been further slight but definite improvements over the past 48 hours.

"Mr Best is feeling well in himself and is fully ambulant but it is likely he will be in hospital for at least another week."

Mr Best was taken to hospital on 8 March complaining of "severe stomach pains".

He has now given his 27-year-old wife Alex a pledge that he will stop drinking.

His personal assistant Philip Hughes said: "George will be quite happy to spend another two or three weeks in hospital, or whatever it takes, to get his health back to normal."
