Football legend George Best faces further tests for a serious alcohol-related liver condition.

The 53-year-old former Manchester United idol, famed for his football genius and hard-drinking lifestyle, had hoped to leave the private Cromwell Hospital in west London on Thursday.

But Dr Akeel Alisa, who works with consultant Professor Roger Williams, said Best was still undergoing treatment.

"He is currently stable and responding to the treatment.

"His stay in hospital may be extended while further tests are carried out," Dr Alisa said.

Doctors have described his condition is described as poorly but not life-threatening.

'No more drinking'

Best, who went to hospital on Wednesday suffering from stomach pains, has promised to heed doctors' advice to give up drinking following his health scare.

But he told newspapers that without the help of his 27-year-old wife, Alex, he would have drunk himself to death.

"If I'd kept on drinking there would have been only one outcome - I would have been six feet under," he told the Mail on Sunday.

He rallied enough over the weekend to watch the fortunes of his former team.

At the hospital on Sunday, Alex said her husband was "doing very well", but declined to comment further.

His personal assistant, Phil Hughes, said the former football great was sitting up in bed, chatting to visitors.

"He's looking and feeling a lot better."
