George Best 'poorly' in hospital

Football legend George Best is being treated for alcohol-related liver problems at a hospital in west London.

His condition is described as poorly but not life-threatening, although he is likely to remain in hospital for another week and doctors of told him he must not drink again.

Best, who has spent the past two days at the Cromwell Hospital, is known as much for his antics off the football field as for his genius on it.

Everybody wants to buy George a drink, which doesn't do him any good

His playboy lifestyle and heavy drinking cut short his playing days at Manchester United and he continued to hit the headlines after retiring from the game.

His agent Alan Platt told BBC TV: "The doctors have told George not to drink.

"I'm sure George is in there thinking he will never drink again.

"The problem, of course, is when he gets better. He's never made a secret of the fact that he has a drink problem.

"We'll keep our fingers crossed and I'm sure he's considering not drinking again. Lets hope he sticks to that."

Earlier, Best's personal assistant Philip Hughes denied newspaper reports that the former Northern Ireland player was fighting for his life.

Hughes said Best had made the appointment a week ago and attended hospital on Wednesday when it was agreed he would stay in for a few days.

He added: "I left him sitting up in bed earlier this evening watching television and he's been talking about how Chelsea beat Marseille on Wednesday night.

"He isn't well, but it's not life threatening - at least I hope not."

Best's wife Alex, 27, told The Sun: "He is in hospital and looks terrible. We're all worried about him."
