Ghent Gold for Gardener
Jason Gardener claimed his first senior title Britain's Jason Gardener blasted his way to 60 metres gold at the European Indoor Championships in Ghent. The Bath sprinter claimed the first title of his senior career as he saw off the challenge of his two Greek rivals.
Gardener's triumph completed a sprint double for Britain following Christian Malcolm's 200m triumph on Saturday.
In all Britain took five medals, The 24-year-old triumphed in 6.49secs - just 0.03 off the European record he set when winning bronze at the world indoors in Japan last year. Yeorgios Theodoridis was second in 6.51secs with fellow Greek Angelos Pavlakakis, the man who beat Gardener to the title two years ago, third in 6.54secs. I came here with the added pressure of being the favourite and I had to show myself that I could win," Gardener said. "Everybody expected nothing but first from me - I have given them that." Carroll claims gold Mark Carroll struck gold in the 3000m to claims Ireland's first medal. The 28-year-old from Cork triumphed after a superbly-judged run, powering from fourth to first with just over two laps to go before completing a famous victory.
Carroll, the first Irishman to win a European indoor medal since Eamonn Coghlan won the 1500m in 1979, clocked seven minutes 49.24secs.
Portugal's Rui Silva finished second (7:49.70) to inflict further disappointment on Britain's John Mayock who grabbed bronze. It was Silva who sent Mayock crashing to the ground at last summer's world championships, leaving the Barnsley runner covered in burns and spike marks. Britain's Marcia Richardson finished eighth in the 60m final in 7.27 secs as Ekaterini Thanou of Greece won in 7.05 secs. Caines fails Birchfield Harrier Daniel Caines saw his brave bid to win a 400m medal end in defeat. Caines blasted through the opening 200m to lead at the bell, but the effort proved too much as he faded to finish sixth in 48.36 secs. Bulgaria's Ilya Tsevontov won in 66.63. "There was nothing else I could do as I was in lane one," Caines said. "I just wanted to get to the front and try and hang on. Coming off the final bend I was still in a medal place, but I just had nothing left to give. "I am disappointed. I know this is my first championships, but without sounding big-headed I don't like coming to these things just to make up the numbers."
