Titans, Rams reach Super Bowl

Steve McNair: Two touchdowns

The St Louis Rams will meet the Tennessee Titans in next Sunday's Super Bowl after one of the tightest NFC Championship games in years.

The Rams edged out the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 11-6 in a nail-biting encounter in St Louis.

It pulled out victory with a 30-yard touchdown pass from Kurt Warner to Ricky Proehl with just 4:44 remaining.

"It's a shame a team has to lose a game like this," said Rams coach Dick Vermeil. "Tampa Bay played their hearts out."

Warner said afterwards: "We were trying to make plays all day long so you've got to give credit to Tampa Bay. This was a great defensive football team. They came hard every play till the end."

Earlier, Tennessee advanced to the Super Bowl for the first time in the 40-year history of the franchise by beating the Jacksonville Jaguars 33-14.

Tennessee, formerly the Houston Oilers and one of the American Football League's original franchises, made it a rare hat trick against Jacksonville with the running of quarterback Steve McNair and a defence that caused six turnovers.

McNair scored on a pair of one-yard runs, running 51 yards to set up his fourth-quarter score in a 23-point second-half Titans blitz.

"I told the team this is Jacksonville week, nothing more than that," jubilant Titans coach Jeff Fisher said after the game. "I'm so proud.

"They said we couldn't beat Jacksonville three times in a season and the players didn't blink an eye. Our players believed, believed and believed and now we're going to the Super Bowl."

Jaguars coach Tom Coughlin said: "For whatever reason, we didn't play as well as we could. The turnovers, the missed opportunities were too much to overcome. It's a bitter pill to swallow."

The Titans and the Rams will play for the Vince Lombardi Trophy next Sunday at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
