Spurs surge further ahead

Tim Duncan was once again the hero for the victorious Spurs

The San Antonio Spurs beat the New York Knicks 80-67 to take a commanding lead in the best-of-seven NBA finals.

In doing so they broke the National Basketball Association record for consecutive play-off victories.

The Spurs posted their 12th straight post-season victory, eclipsing the record of 11 set by the 1989 Los Angeles Lakers.

The series now moves to Madison Square Garden - New York's home territory - for game three on Monday.

Tim Duncan led the way for the Spurs with 25 points and 15 rebounds.

David Robinson added 16 points and 11 rebounds, and between them the Spurs big men blocked nine shots as the San Antonio defence stifled New York.

But even Duncan was not as dominant as he was in the first game, when he had 33 points and 16 rebounds.

"It was a very ugly win. No way to hide that," he said. "But we win best when it's ugly. We can pull those types of games out."

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said: "We're going to New York with an advantage, but I don't think we've outplayed them. We've just knocked down some shots."
