Relief as Bond goes through

Nigel Bond: "What a relief"

Nigel Bond has booked his place in the last 16 of the £1.4m Embassy World Championship.

The 1995 Crucible Theatre runner-up survived a determined second session recovery by Dominic Dale to complete a 10-6 victory.

But Welshman Dale chalked up 167 points in frame 15 - the highest individual total ever made in a single frame.

However, Bond survived the attack of nerves to whitewash Dale in frame 16 and move into round two against 1997 world champion Ken Doherty or Steve James.

"What a relief," Bond said.

"It crossed my mind that I had once beaten Cliff Thorburn 10-9 from 9-2 down.

"So when Dom got back from 8-1 to 9-6 I was sat in my chair thinking 'I hope it doesn't happen to me.'"
