Everton fans leave early after Southampton go two up

Everton were booed off the pitch at Goodison Park after losing two nil to fellow strugglers Southampton. Matt le Tissier and Kevin Davies scored for the Saints.

Everton are now fourth from bottom ahead of Bolton on goal difference then newly promoted Barnsley and Sheffield Wednesday.

The first goal was created on 24 minutes by two of Southampton's most recent signings. Carlton Palmer robbed John Oster, and then found David Hirst in acres of space. He had plenty of time to pick out le Tissier.

Saint's second was a moment of individual brilliance from Kevin Davies. He picked up the ball 40 yards out, evaded tackles from three Everton defenders, before placing his shot wide of Southall.

Everton had their chances, which mainly fell to teenage sensation Danny Cadamarteri.

In the end it was a match for two former Everton favourites to savour. Saints boss Dave Jones was an Everton defender in the 1970's, and midfielder Kevin Richardson was a member of the 1984-5 title winning squad.
