Key moments from the final

Mark Waugh dives to brilliantly catch Wajahatullah Wasti

These were the decisive moments of the 1999 World Cup final.

  • Wasim Akram wins the toss and elects to bat, after rain delays the start for 30 minutes. His opposing captain Steve Waugh says that it is "a good toss to lose".

Donna Symonds: "Australia make an early breakthrough"

  • Saeed Anwar hits the third ball of Glenn McGrath's over for four, signalling his intent to attack when possible.

  • With the score at 21 for one, Saeed plays on to his middle stump off a wide delivery from Damien Fleming.

  • Having been dropped by McGrath at deep long-off, Abdul Rassaq is caught by the Australian captain at extra cover off Tom Moody. Pakistan are now 68 for 3.

  • Having been tortured by Shane Warne for an entire over, Ijaz Ahmed is clean bowled by the leg spinner.

  • Moin Khan, one of Pakistan's most effective run-getters during the World Cup, is caught by Adam Gilchrist off Warne. He is the fifth man to depart and his side have yet to reach three figures.

Donna Symonds: "Inzamam wouldn't leave the crease"

  • The last of Pakistan's recognised batsmen, Inzamam-ul-Haq, is controversially given out by umpire David Shepherd, caught by Gilchrist off Paul Reiffel.

  • Saqlain Mushtaq is brilliantly caught by Ricky Ponting off McGrath and Pakistan are all out for 132 - the lowest score in a World Cup final.

  • Gilchrist uppercuts Shoaib Akhtar for six as Australia race to 75 from their first ten overs.

  • Shoaib is removed from the attack after being hit for 37 runs off four overs.

  • Despite losing the wickets of Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting, Australia reach their target of 133 when Darren Lehmann cuts through the covers for four runs.
