Captain Alastair Campbell won the toss in bright sunshine for the African country. But his gamble of batting first failed, as the innings was twice delayed by rain. Pace bowler Geoff Allott took three wickets, two of them early on as Zimbabwe struggled to 45 for three, and one more as the innings crumbled away. It gave him 18 victims for the tournament - equalling Indian Roger Binny's 1983 record for a single World Cup. Allott finished with three for 24 as did Chris Cairns, who passed 100 one-day career wickets. Campbell and Murray Goodwin put on 91 for the fourth wicket but Neil Johnson and Guy Whittall were the only other batsmen to make double figures. Slow rate The Zimbabweans struck just one boundary in the last 14.3 overs and the rain upset the concentration and rhythm of the batsmen as they struggled to lift their run rate above three an over. Grant Flower was brilliantly run out by Matthew Horne with a direct hit with the score on 10. Fellow opener Neil Johnson cracked five boundaries off Dion Nash as he sped to 25 off 32 balls. But he was bowled by Allott, who then had Andy Flower caught at point for nought to make it 45 for three. Goodwin (57) and Campbell (40) rescued the innings but at one stage they scored just 16 runs in seven overs. They were dismissed in quick succession shortly after the second break in play, and the rest of the batsmen folded with little resistance. The match looks likely to go into a second day, with the innings not finishing until after 1730 local time.
