Gwynedd is set to become home to Wales's first official nudist beach.

In recent years, there have been a number of complaints from locals and other visitors to Morfa Dyffryn near Barmouth, about the sight of nude sunbathers.

Councillors have voted to designate part of a beach as specifically for nudists.

Some councillors were concerned that they were setting a dangerous precedent and others felt that attempts should be made to ban the nudists completely.

However the majority felt that confining the nudists to a specific area would make it easier for the police to prosecute anyone who undresses outside the area.

The matter will now go before Gwynedd's executive committee.

The council is awaiting a response from the Crown, which owns the site.

As temperatures soar, the popular stretch of beach between Barmouth and Harlech has attracted its fair share of sunseekers - including those who prefer to bathe nude.

In small numbers, the naturists are not a problem for those who live and work nearby.

But locals have complained that because the area is now being publicised on the internet, it have started to attract even more nudists.

Pc Dewi Wyn of North Wales Police said he was glad action had been taken as it would clear up the present confusion.

"There are no boundaries here, there are no designated areas," he said.

"People do not know where they can and cannot get undressed."
