Bingo callers seeking full house

Bingo is big business in Wales

Wales' liveliest bingo callers are taking to the stage to try to earn the title of Caller of the Year.

Contestants taking part in the event at Bridgend are vying to be the game's ambassador for the new millennium.

BBC Wales's Peter Johnson and Vaughan Roderick discover how bingo calling becomes a "calling"
Judges are looking for factors such as charm and charisma and the ability to hold the attention of the players.

Finalists also have to show credentials that include calmness under pressure and a presence that exudes control.

All of the Welsh contestants have their eyes on the UK finals in London later this month, where the grand prize is a week's holiday in the United States and £500 spending money.

The winner will also become one of the first "virtual" callers on the new style National Game, which is being launched next year in a push to widen the appeal of bingo.

Shaun Homewood, from Mecca Bingo in Swansea, has been polishing up his skills and lists one of his primary talents as his way of injecting excitement into calling games.

His ultimate "calling", though, is the chance to hit the big time as a singer on the cabaret circuit.

Bingo halls in Wales attract thousands of people, some spending in excess of £50 a week for the chance of winning thousands of pounds.

Old style halls have been transformed into out-of-town entertainment centres, with food and cabaret and seating for up to 1,500 people.
