Jailbreak warders suspended

Parc prison: inmate escaped by hiding in a lorry

Authorities at the privately-run Parc Prison in south Wales have suspended three warders after a prisoner escaped.

The suspensions came after 25-year-old inmate Raymond Osbourne escaped by hiding in the back of a cement lorry as it left the newly-built jail at Bridgend.

Osbourne, who was service a 17-month sentence for violence, jumped out of the lorry 12 miles away He was recaptured four hours later.

Full investigation due

The prison, which is operated by Securicor, opened two years ago and some building work is still taking place there.

The three officers were suspended pending a full investigation. It is the latest in a serious of problems at the prison including five suicides and a number of disturbances.

The company could face a financial penalty from the Prison Service over the latest incident with the escape three weeks ago.

A spokesman for Securicor said: "We can confirm that three members of staff have been suspended pending the outcome of an investigation.

"It would be wrong to comment further while the investigation is being undertaken."
