Improving schools (1-50)
This year, for the first time, the Department for Education and Employment is publishing data showing English schools' GCSE results over four years, starting in 1994.

The 240 schools - out of 5,141 in this year's tables - which have increased the proportion of their pupils achieving at least five GCSEs at grades A* to C in each of those four years.

Schools which entered fewer than 30 pupils have been discounted. This table shows the 1994 and 1997 GCSE results for these 240 schools, and ranks them by the size of the overall improvement (Rise).

Figures in brackets show where each school would appear in a list of the same schools, ranked by this year's GCSE results alone.

Figures after the school name show the age range of its pupils and the number taking GCSE.
