Thousands of people lined the streets of Edinburgh to watch Scotland's latest political milestone, the opening of the new parliament by the Queen.

Young and old turned out in bright summer sunshine to watch the pomp and circumstance of the formal events which culminated in the Queen declaring the parliament officially open.

The controversy over the arrangements and guest list were forgotten and politicians put aside their differences to celebration the occasion.

Here, BBC News Online brings you some of the images which sum up the day.
