Tony Adams described his title as an "honour and a pleasure"
Arsenal defender Tony Adams spoke of his pride "as a humble human being" at being awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Queens Birthday Honours
"This is a very proud moment for me and my family," Adams said.

"To have been selected to receive this prestigious award is both an honour and a pleasure."

Adams is one of a number of sportsmen and women to have received honours, but the title highlights his accomplishment particularly, after alcoholism and injuries threatened to bring a premature end to his career.

Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood said: "Tony Adams is a man of great character and a footballer with magnificent ability.

"For Tony to be honoured with an MBE is testament to his achievements both as a person and as a player.

Brown
Craig Brown: Honoured for his services to football
"Everyone at Arsenal Football Club is truly proud to have a captain of Tony Adams's calibre and this distinguished accolade is a befitting tribute to a man who has contributed so much to the game of football."

A host of other top sporting figures were also honoured, with treble winning Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson awarded a knighthood for his services to football.

Scotland manager, Craig Brown, received the CBE and Wimbledon and Jamaican midfielder Robbie Earle was awarded the MBE.

Other names in the list included former Spurs star, Garth Crookes who received the OBE for services to the Institute of Professional Sport and Stephanie Moore, widow of Bobby Moore - who received the MBE for her services to the Bobby Moore Fund.

Adventurer Brian Jones, who completed a record-breaking first-ever round-the-world balloon flight last March, received the OBE.

Jones performed the death-defying feat with Swiss co-pilot Bertrand Picard in the Breitling Orbiter balloon, and received the award for his services to ballooning.

Judo expert Kate Howey, world middle-weight champion in 1998, and the only British woman to win a world title in any Olympic sport last year, was given an MBE, along with Scotsman Peter Nicol, who has ranked as number one squash player in the world, as well as being a Commonwealth Games gold medallist.

Janette Brittin, who has retired after being England's most capped woman cricketer, received an MBE for services to women's cricket. Last year she became the highest woman run-scorer in Test history, breaking the record of 1,594 runs set by former England captain Rachael Heyhoe-Flint 19 years earlier.
