Anwar: The re-written charges

Anwar's supporters continue to gather outside the courthouse

The four amended charges in the ongoing trial of Anwar Ibrahim are as follows. In each case the original charge is followed by the amended version, as delivered by the prosecution on 13 January 1999, with the change in bold.

That he directed Mohd Said Awang, Special Branch Director, and Amir Junus, Special Branch Deputy Director II, to obtain a written confession from Azizan Abu Bakar to deny sexual misconduct and sodomy committed by him in order to protect himself from criminal action or proceedings.

As a result, Azizan Abu Bakar gave a written confession dated 18 August 1997 to the prime minister.

AMENDED VERSION:

That he directed Mohd Said Awang, Special Branch Director, and Amir Junus, Special Branch Deputy Director II, to obtain a written statement from Azizan Abu Bakar addressed to the Rt Hon Prime Minister denying his allegation of sodomy as contained in his "Pengakuan Bersumpah" (Statutory Declaration) dated 5 August 1997, for his advantage, to wit, to save himself from embarrassment.

That he directed Mohd Said Awang, Special Branch Director, and Amir Junus, Special Branch Deputy Director II, to urge Azizan Abu Bakar to give a written statement to deny sexual misconduct and sodomy committed by him in order to protect himself from criminal action or proceedings.

Azizan Abu Bakar gave a written statement as ordered.

AMENDED VERSION:

That he directed Mohd Said Awang, Special Branch Director, and Amir Junus, Special Branch Deputy Director II, to obtain a written statement from Azizan Abu Bakar to deny the allegation of sodomy as contained in his "Pengakuan Bersumpah" (Statutory Declaration) dated 5 August 1997, which they obtained as directed, in the form of a "Kenyataan Umum" (Public Statement), for his advantage in order to protect himself from criminal action.

That he directed Mohd Said Awang, Special Branch Director, and Amir Junus, Special Branch Deputy Director II, to obtain a written confession from Ummi Hafilda Ali to deny sexual misconduct and sodomy committed by him in order to protect himself from criminal action or proceedings.

Ummi Hafilda Ali gave a written confession dated 18 August 1997 to the Prime Minister.

AMENDED VERSION:

That he directed Mohd Said Awang, Special Branch Director, and Amir Junus, Special Branch Deputy Director II, to obtain a written statement from Ummi Hafilda Ali addressed to the Prime Minister denying allegations of sexual misconduct and sodomy as contained in her confidential report entitled "Perihal Salah Laku Timbalan Perdana Menteri" (Sexual Misconduct of the Deputy Prime Minister) dated 5 August 1997 in order to save himself from embarrassment.

That he directed Mohd Said Awang, Special Branch Director, and Amir Junus, Special Branch Deputy Director II, to urge Ummi Hafilda Ali to give a written statement to deny sexual misconduct and sodomy committed by him in order to protect himself from criminal action or proceedings.

Ummi Hafilda Ali gave the written statement dated 29 August 1997.

AMENDED VERSION:

That he directed Mohd Said Awang, Special Branch Director, and Amir Junus, Special Branch Deputy Director II, to obtain written statements from Ummi Hafilda Ali denying the allegations of sexual misconduct and sodomy committed by him in order to protect himself from criminal action.
