Experimenting for the future
BBC Education Correspondent Mike Baker looks ahead to the arrival of a radical experiment in British education, the education action zones. |

What are Education Action Zones?
Action zones will cover clusters of around 20 schools - each zone will be run by a forum made up of the local education authority, local and national businesses, school governors, parents and other local and community groups. |

How will the action zones be run?
Schools within an action aone will, if they wish, continue to control their own budgets but they will become the main testing grounds for many educational innovations. |

The fear of privatisation
When the government made it clear earlier this year that it wants at least one of the EAZs to have a private company as the lead partner there was a storm of protest from the education world. |

The way ahead
Education Action Zones could be a turning point for the school system or they could suffer a similar fate to the EPAs of the 1960s. |
