Militants kill Pakistani soldiers in attack on base

The Pakistani army says at least six soldiers have been killed in an attack by militants on one of its camps in the north-western tribal region of Khyber.

It says dozens of militants stormed the camp near the Afghan border after a car bomb blew a hole in one of its walls.

The army says 25 attackers were killed. The Taliban have not commented and the claim cannot be independently verified.

Violence has risen in Khyber since the army drove militants from strongholds in South Waziristan, Swat and Bajaur.

Pakistani forces have been conducting limited operations in some parts of Khyber region for several months.

As a result, militant attacks in Peshawar, the regional capital, and on Nato supply trucks passing through Khyber region have fallen.

Militants 'regrouping'

Wednesday's attack in the Bara area of Khyber is the second co-ordinated assault on troops in the area in a week.

Last Friday, military officials said a checkpost in neighbouring Orakzai agency was briefly overrun by militants, in very similar circumstances.

Officials say in the latest violence 15 soldiers were also injured. Residents said the exchange of fire had continued throughout the night.

Security operations have been going in Bara for several months.

The government has on a number of occasions claimed to have cleared militants out of the area, but attacks against government installations continue.

The BBC's Aleem Maqbool in Islamabad says the fear is that the militants have moved to areas like Khyber and Orakzai and are regrouping.

The army says it does not have the resources to carry out another large-scale offensive and is instead concentrating on containing the militants, our correspondent says.
