Deadly tractor crash kills 23 in northern India

A poorly maintained road in India
Many accidents occur due to poorly maintained roads

At least 23 people were killed and 12 others injured when a vehicle overturned in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, police said.

The accident took place on Monday night in Sitapur town, 80km (50 miles) from the state capital, Lucknow.

About 70 people were packed into a trolley pulled by a tractor when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The dead were all women and children.

Road accidents are common in India and claim thousands of lives every year.

Most accidents are caused by reckless driving, old vehicles and poorly maintained roads.
