Ten people have been killed in a suicide bomb attack outside a court in the north-western Pakistani city of Peshawar, officials say.

The bomber blew himself up at the gate to the court building after police stopped him entering, officials said.

At least one policeman was among those killed. Another 44 people were injured.

Peshawar, near the Afghan border, has been targeted repeatedly since Pakistan sent its troops to fight the Taliban in the tribal region of South Waziristan.

On 28 October, at least 100 people died when a huge car bomb ripped through the city's busy Peepal Mandi market.

Hundreds more people have been killed in attacks across the country since the army operation began in the autumn.

Monday's blast took place outside the district and sessions court in Peshawar, Sahibzada Anees, the head of the Peshawar administration, told reporters.

He said a man had got out of an auto rickshaw and tried to enter the court premises but was stopped by a policeman at the entry gate, after which he blew himself up.

"He tried to enter the building but could not do so because of our security arrangements," senior provincial minister Bashir Ahmad Bilour said.

The courts are located on a busy road that links the old city with the cantonment area.

A bomb disposal squad official said the bomber had used about 7kg (15lb) of explosives and 2kg of ball bearings.

The dead and injured were taken to nearby Lady Reading hospital.
