Suicide bomber kills officer at Pakistan navy complex

Security forces cordon off the site of the blast in Islamabad (2 December 2009)
Officials said buildings in the complex were a safe distance from the gate

A suicide bomber has blown himself up at the entrance to the headquarters of Pakistan's navy in Islamabad, killing a security officer, officials have said.

Chief police commissioner Fazeel Asghar said two other security officers had been critically wounded. Two civilians, one a 6-year-old boy, were also hurt.

He said the attacker had detonated his explosives when challenged at the gate of the navy complex at 1335 (0835 GMT).

The Pakistani security forces have been targeted in a series of recent attacks.

In October, a raid on an army base in the city of Rawalpindi left 19 people dead. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility.

Wednesday's violence came a day after US President Barack Obama said he would send 30,000 extra troops to Afghanistan, and that Washington would maintain an "effective relationship" with Pakistan.

The civilians wounded in the blast both suffered "indirect injuries", although the boy is in a critical condition, a spokesman for the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences hospital said.

Officials said buildings within the complex, which is located in the capital's central E8 sector near the Margalla road, had suffered no damage because they were a safe distance from the gate.

President Asif Ali Zardari condemned the attack and said it would not deter the government from fighting militants.

On Tuesday, a provincial politician was killed in a suicide attack in the Swat valley as the army continued its offensive against the Taliban.
