In pictures: Dalai Lama visits Arunachal Pradesh

Buddhist monks wait to catch a glimpse of the Dalai Lama as he arrives at the Tibetan monastery in Tawang, India

Devout Budhists flocked from far and wide to see the Dalai Lama in Arunachal Pradesh, which borders Tibet, with many travelling to the monastery by foot and some taking five days to get there.

The Dalai Lama was visiting the remote Himalayan town of Tawang - perched some 11,400 ft (3,500 m) high - to lead a number of prayer and teaching sessions for Buddhist pilgrims.

There was much activity in Tawang ahead of the visit, the fifth time the Tibetan spiritual leader has gone to Arunachal Pradesh in 50 years.

Security precautions were in evidence in Arunachal Pradesh, which lies next to Tibet and is itself a source of dispute between India and Beijing.

China has declared the visit is damaging to ties with India; the Dalai Lama says this is baseless. Arunachal Pradesh was his first stop when he fled Tibet in 1959.
